Therapy Corner – The Therapeutic Benefits of Music

The Origins and Power of Music

If you were to investigate when music was created google would indicate 35,000 years ago. There is research that has proven that music can impact humans in a significant way.  You likely remember at least one jingle in a commercial selling a product. There is a chance that there is at least one song that has impacted you in some way. That is the power of music.

The Therapeutic Impact of Music on Mental and Physical Health

Research indicates that music can be therapeutic for those struggling with mental health conditions, disabilities, and physical conditions such as dementia. There have been studies indicating music can lower blood pressure and heart rate. In 2007 study indicated that pregnant women who listened to music for at least 30 minutes had a reduction in psychological stress, depression, and anxiety (Chang et al.,2008). Studies have also suggested that music can enhance the immune system.

Incorporating Music into Daily Life

I include music in my daily routine whether working out, getting ready, writing, or winding down for the evening. I find that starting my day off with music can set the tone for my day. I encourage clients to implement music as a coping skill to decrease symptoms. I explain that tempo is important. A slower tempo can help with relaxation as well as stress reduction. A faster tempo can help improve mood.

I have utilized music in sessions by having clients share a song with me that they enjoy or that inspires them. This allows for rapport building and allows for clients to explore their feelings differently. It provides a way for clients to obtain insight into what they may have been feeling when they chose to share the song. I have seen the impact of music in group art therapy with children who have experienced trauma. It allowed them to express themselves through drumming and singing. Their mood and self-esteem improved greatly as indicated by their PHQ9 scores.

Embracing the Healing Power of Music

In conclusion, music does not just benefit our clients, but it can have a positive impact on those who provide care. So turn up your favorite tune and sing.
